Why Investing in Leadwork Pays Off: A Heritage Bay Window in Saltburn-by-the-Sea

When most people think about roofing, they picture tiles, felt, or maybe a quick fix to stop a leak. But every once in a while, we get a project that reminds us what true craftsmanship looks like — like this heritage lead bay window in Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

It’s not something we do every day, but when we do, it’s a proper showcase of skill, patience, and pride in our trade.

The Long-Term Value of Leadwork

Leadwork isn’t the cheapest option up front — and that’s exactly why some homeowners overlook it. But here’s the truth: lead is an investment, not a cost.

While other materials might last 20–30 years, properly installed lead can last 75 years or more. That means less maintenance, fewer replacements, and real long-term value for your property.

This project in Saltburn is a great example. It’s definitely a change from the more cost-effective methods you see used today, but when you know that roof will still be watertight in the next century, the initial outlay suddenly looks like a smart decision.

Traditional Skill Meets Technical Precision

For this project, we used Code 5 cast lead from Midland Lead — the industry standard for heritage work. But materials alone don’t make quality; technique does.

We used a mix of bossing and welding methods depending on the section of the bay. On the more inclined areas, we applied welted seams with copper cleats for strength and flexibility. For the drip detail, we formed a copper strip folded down the front, bent underneath, and crimped together with seam pliers.

Every joint was welded and detailed to heritage standards, giving the roof both its traditional look and modern durability.

Why This Matters for Homeowners and Developers

If you own or manage a heritage property, details like these matter. It’s not just about keeping the weather out — it’s about preserving the character of the building while ensuring it performs for the next generation.

That’s what proper roofing is all about: skill, respect for materials, and doing the job once — the right way.

Final Thoughts

Projects like this remind me why I got into roofing in the first place. It’s the satisfaction of knowing that when we finish a job, it’s not just another roof — it’s part of the building’s story.

Proud of the lads for the work on this one. No shortcuts, no rushing — just proper craftsmanship, built to last.
